Remembering Elizabeth Catlett
In honor of artist Elizabeth Catlett’s birth month, The Bronx Museum of the Arts will display Catlett’s Elvira in the North Wing Lobby throughout April. We welcome you to view this work and honor Catlett's legacy as an African-American sculptor and printmaker.
In 2012, the Bronx Museum featured the artist's work in the exhibitionStargazers: Elizabeth Catlett in Conversation with 21 Contemporary Artists. Thanks to a major grant from the Ford Foundation, Elvira was later purchased for the Museum’s permanent collection. Friday, April 25, 2014, 6:30pm to 9:00pm1040 Lounge: Portadores
Portadores is a collaborative project between artist Almudena Lobera and architect Isabel Martínez Abascal, exploring the medium of living bodies. The project consists of drawings by Almudena Lobera that are shown and tattooed onto the skin of volunteers by Isabel Martínez Abascal, and then are destroyed so that the only remaining and existing works are those on the skin. The execution of the dibuajes (drawings-tattoos) requires the collaboration of the viewer, who becomes an integral part of the work. This project aims to call into question the material form of the artwork and to explore social and relational notions.
The Bronx Museum of the Arts will host the performance of Portadores, together with an artist talk and videos from previous presentations of the piece.
Applications are now being accepted to be portador #15! For details click here. Read more > Free admission and bar (donations suggested) |
