Many of my readers may want to know about the Walgreens and Express Script situation. Walgreens tried to get a new contract with Express Scripts but did not. Therefore Walgreens and Duane Reade are no longer on the Express Scripts network. Issues in the negotiations including what is and what is not a brand and generic drug. This also creates problems for people in the military who use Tricare.
Walgreens is trying to help patients by giving a special discount on annual membership for its Prescription Savings Club. The deal is that you can now join Walgreens Prescription Savings Club for only $5, or for $10 for a family membership. You can get generic drug supplies for many drugs at costs that work out to less than one dollar per week. Take a look at Walgreens on Twitter and also Walgreens on Facebook to learn more about these offers that may help your access to prescription drugs at a fair price.
This is a complicated issue, because patients only see what they pay at a pharmacy. They do not usually know that there is a middleman, in this case Express Scripts, that sells the prescription drugs to the pharmacy. Middleman companies often make large profits, and make things tight for the pharmacy and patients on the other ends of the deal. It is worthwhile to find out more about these issues in these tough economic times.
