Nuclear power is suited to developing countries,
because it is about 14 times cheaper than solar power, the ASEAN
nations were told at a public seminar on nuclear energy January
17, hosted by the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute in Quezon
City. Speaking was Dr. Sueo Machi, from the Forum for Nuclear
Cooperation in Asia, who is a former commissioner of the Japan
Atomic Energy Commission, and former deputy director of the IAEA.
Five of the ten ASEAN nations, Dr. Machi reported--Indonesia,
Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam--are moving toward
the construction of nuclear power plants, to become operational
betwwen 2015-2021.
A 1-gigawatt solar plant in Japan, he said, would need the
whole area of the Yamanote railway line (34.5 kilometers long) to
be covered by solar panels. For wind power, "you need three times
more area."
