Greenies in the South Bronx, Gardening

All these local control green projects, are they real, or just social control?

This autumn a large number of gardening and environmental projects are underway in the South Bronx. Late in October I stopped by the El Girasol Community garden on E. 138th St, by Cypress Avenue. This is a project of the local community and Bronx Green-up, from the Bronx Botanical Garden. Most of the garden is already yielding various vegetables and herbs, but part of the garden is being developed now. Mr. Al Miller and his colleague Ulric have begun bringing in stones to get this area to become level ground. They are building a landscaped garden to be known as “Green Hand Land”. It will be in the shape of the palm of a hand toward the front of the garden, with fingers extending back. The area for the garden is about 5,000 square feet. Mr. Miller hopes to set this up as a children’s garden, growing herbs that the children can examine and sample like mint and using it for ecological study for the local schools. Already wild plants grow there, like Chinese tomatoes. The area in front of the El Girasol Garden is used each Wednesday for a Farmer’s Market from 10 am to 4 pm, which will continue through November. Some of the produce sold is grown locally here at El Girasol Garden and nearby at Brook Park at 141st Street and Brook Avenue while other produce is from farms in the tri-state region.

At Brook Park recently they had a 'Street Project' to revitalize Brook Park, a small and lovely park. They planted and prepared bulbs, mulching, wood chipping and weeding. Friends of Brook Park is a leading environmental organization based in the South Bronx since 1999. They are also into the third year of a Community Supported Agriculture project that raises fresh organic food in the South Bronx. Their Environmental Education programs have provided hands-on access for hundreds of students from local schools such as PS 179, MS 220 and 222 and PS 30 and there is also a Green Team mentoring program with the Community School for Social Justice.

This year environmentalists have been advocating for one million trees in the city Parks budget to revitalize parks and streets. This is a project for all of New York City. Mayor Michael Bloomberg and actress and activist Bette Midler planted a tree in the Bronx on Tuesday Oct. 10th, as the first of one million trees to be placed throughout the five boroughs in the next decade. They planted a Carolina Silverbell tree in the Morrisania section. Million Trees NYC is one of 127 PlaNYC initiatives to make New York City more sustainable by 2030. Cultivando un huerto y poniendo verde el Bronx del sur

Sr. Al Molinero y su colega Ulric ha comenzado traer en piedras para conseguir esta área para hacer tierra llana (smooth). Están construyendo un jardín ajardinado que se conocerá como "tierra verde de la mano". Estará en la forma de la palma de una mano hacia el frente del jardín, con los dedos extendiendo detrás. El área para el jardín es cerca de 5.000 pies cuadrados. Sr. Molinero espera instalar esto mientras que un jardín de los niños, produciendo las hierbas que los niños pueden examinar y muestra como la menta y usarla para el estudio ecológico para las escuelas locales.
